Should I Buy This Book? Review: Small Change

Small Change I recently received a book called Small Change from author @_Sheila_Roberts . This is an unorthodox personal finance book in that it is fiction. It’s not like other story based personal finance books in that the whole point of this book isn’t to just teach you about personal finance but to actually tell a story. Here’s an synopsis of the book as read from the back cover:

Rachel, Jessica, and Tiffany have money problems-major money problems. Tiffany’s whipped out the plastic one too many times, and now a mountain of debt has come crashing down on her. Jessica’s husband lost his job-thrusting his longtime stay-at-home mom out into the cold, cruel workforce. And Rachel’s divorce transformed her from an upper-middle-class mom to a strapped-for-cash divorcée. What are three best friends to do?

Get financially fit, that’s what! Together, Rachel, Jessica, and Tiffany start a financial support group called the Small Change Club-challenging one another to bring balance back to their checkbooks, and their lives. Even though frugality is a lot harder than they ever imagined, these women are about to learn some very important lessons: that making small changes in their spending habits can make a big difference….and that some things in life, like good friends, are truly priceless.

This is a book for the female demographic if you can’t tell. And it definitely lets you know it. However, I found it to be a very inspirational book. The character Rachel actually makes a blog to share the tips they learn and the progress they are making, so it hit home with me. But seeing these people go through their different situations will really make you want to change your ways because you can actually see it work for them.

The Negative

The only thing I really saw negative with the book was that it’s predictable, but most fiction books aimed at women are, so take the negative for what it’s worth.

The Positive

There are a lot of positives to this book. It’s really inspirational, there are some surprises in the book that I didn’t see coming, there are several good tips on saving money, and even ideas on earning some extra money.

Would I buy it?

No, but I’m not the demographic so I don’t count. I would recommend it to my girlfriend, mom, grandma, and sister (if I had a sister). The point is all of you ladies out there should read this book, and maybe even share a chapter or two with any man in your life. I definitely got some use out of it so I am glad I read it.
